The price of bitcoin, the world’s biggest and best known cryptocurrency, fell to as low as 10,000 US dollars on the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange, the lowest since Dec. 1.

The most widely-held cryptocurrency touched a peak of almost USD 20,000 in December.

Traders have pointed to concern over heightened regulation as one reason behind the latest bout of selling.

Bitcoin’s drop comes amid the backdrop of a wider fall in cryptocurrency markets.
